Winning Oddball Fantasy Football Leagues: How FFA’s Customizable Projections Provide an Edge

Fantasy football continues to evolve, with unique scoring formats and customized settings beyond the typical league formats. While many sources are calibrated to standard league formats, this leaves managers playing in leagues with unusual or highly customized scoring settings at a significant disadvantage. Fantasy Football Analytics, with its unique wisdom-of-the-crowd approach, provides adaptable projections for these non-standard, “oddball” leagues.

Why Typical Rankings Fall Short

Most fantasy projection sites and analysts build their rankings around default scoring systems—yards, touchdowns, and receptions (in PPR leagues). But these generic projections often miss in leagues that reward less common stats like pass completions, rush attempts, or individual defensive player (IDP) production. They also overlook position-specific boosts, such as tight end premium (TEP), where tight ends earn extra points per catch. Without adaptable projections, managers in leagues with these scoring systems face uncertainty and increased risk during drafts and weekly lineup decisions.

How FFA’s Methodology Adapts to Oddball Leagues

Fantasy Football Analytics aggregates projections from multiple sources to create an average that captures a broader range of possible outcomes. The FFA app allows you to customize scoring by position—whether that’s TE premium multipliers, RB only reception points, or QB specific rushing bonuses. Projections instantly update to reflect your unique settings, giving you an edge in leagues where traditional rankings fall short.

Specifically, our customizable settings include:

Passing:

  • Pass completions, attempts
  • Bonus points for passing milestones (300, 350, 400 yards, 40-yard completions)

Rushing:

  • Rush attempts and yardage bonuses (100, 150, 200 yards, 40-yard runs)

Receiving:

  • Reception bonuses, yardage milestones (100, 150, 200 yards, 40-yard receptions)

Kicking:

  • Field goals categorized by distance (0-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50+ yards)
  • Penalties for missed field goals

Miscellaneous and Defensive Settings:

  • Fumbles (total and lost), two-point conversions
  • Detailed defensive metrics (return yards, blocks, safeties, points allowed)

IDP Settings:

  • Solo and assisted tackles, forced and recovered fumbles, pass deflections, defensive touchdowns, and interceptions

Example Oddball Scoring Leagues

Big Game Bonus

We’ll start with a league format that rewards big performances. “Big Game Bonus,” a fantasy league structure designed specifically to reward explosive player performances:

  • Passing Bonuses: 5 points for reaching 300, 350, and 400 passing yards.
  • Rushing Bonuses: 5 points for achieving 100, 150, and 200 rushing yards.
  • Receiving Bonuses: 5 points for hitting 100, 150, and 200 receiving yards.

Apart from these high-performance bonuses, the league uses a standard PPR scoring format. While many sources struggle to accurately project player performance in this format, FFA excels. Using the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) as an accuracy benchmark, FFA’s average projection achieved the lowest MAE of all sources.

Tight Ends 2.0

Now we’ll look at a league format that dramatically shifts tight end value. Single source projections often undervalue TEs in these formats, but the FFA flexibility captures the variance in how different analysts value the position spike.

  • Tight End Premium Bonus: 2 PPR for TEs (while WRs/RBs get standard 1.0 PPR).
  • TE Yardage Bonus: 0.15 points per receiving yard for TEs (instead of standard 0.1)

Again, when using MAE as an accuracy benchmark, FFA’s average projection outperforms the others.

If you’re looking for customizable projections, the FFA web app has what you need. For detailed instructions for customizing setting and using the app for a snake draft check out this page.

Turning Complexity into Your Competitive Edge

Fantasy football managers in unique leagues no longer need to settle for rankings built for typical scoring systems. With Fantasy Football Analytics, you get projections that are easily adaptable for your league’s specific scoring categories. The FFA app transforms the complexity of “oddball” settings into an advantage, making your draft decisions sharper and your weekly lineup moves smarter.
