2017 Fantasy Football Projections

  • — 4 Jun, 2017

We are releasing our 2017 fantasy football projections in a Shiny webapp using R.  The app allows you to calculate custom rankings/projections for your league based on your league settings.  The projections incorporate more sources of projections than any other site, and have been the most accurate projections over the last 5 years.  New features of the app this season include the ability to view additional variables (including “per game” projections).  You can access the Projections tool here:

http://apps.fantasyfootballanalytics.net

For instructions how to use the app, see here.  We also have a Draft Optimizer tool (see here).  See our articles on how to win your Snake Draft and Auction Draft.  We will be updating the projections as the season approaches with more sources of projections.  Feel free to add suggestions in the comments!

The download button doesn’t seem to be working. Is this an error or a feature to be added later?

Looking really excellent, guys! I love it! Sleeker than the last iteration for sure. A couple suggestions:

    1. On the “Fumbles” tab for scoring, I think you want to clarify that you’re talking about “Fumbles Lost” in the specific box. Presently it just says fumbles. Most projections sites just project fumbles lost, but PFF/Yahoo projects both, and most platforms (such as MFL) allows different points for both. Similarly, on the “Returns” tab, can you clarify if you’re referring to special teams returns (kickoff/punt/FG), defensive returns (fumble & INT), or both?

    2. I was regularly getting the “Disconnected from Server” message (every 5 minutes or so), and although the word “Reload” was there, it was not clickable as a link for me, so I just had to Refresh. After I Refreshed the page, it discarded my Scoring Settings entirely, even the ones that had already been saved. So this rendered the scoring setting customization almost useless.

    3. I’m confused what scoring system the app is using at any given time (I would check myself, but like Gus, the Download button is not a clickable link for me). Is it the scoring system I’ve entered into “Scoring”, or is the one that is selected in general league settings? It seems that there’s no way to select “Custom scoring system” or something like that on the League Settings page. I believe you guys were aiming to be able for us to create “Scoring System Profiles” or “League Profiles” that we could pull up at will, but I don’t see the ability to save two different league setups or scoring systems. Please let me know!

Is this different than signing in and is there some type of verification e-mail sent that I have to respond to? Thanks as always for your great work!!!

… I just see the comment in my 2:57 remarks. If I place a cursor over the download sign after logging in I get a banned circle sign and the highlighted message tells me please log in to use this feature. I can’t toggle the download button. If I pull down the settings tab I get the same banned circle sign without a highlighted message. If I click on any of the settings options the ap resets. When it comes back it gives me the original message sometimes, sometimes in the place of “Please verify your email before signing in” I get
“You are using a restricted version of the Apps. Log in to enable features”.

I may be missing something, but it seems that when you change the scoring settings, the projections don’t change at all (trying to adjust to ppr scoring). Is there an ‘update” or ‘refresh’ button that I’m not seeing?

New look is fantastic. Two items…

1.) When I look at the density chart, I see three sources. I’m guessing more are being added at a later date?

2.) It looks like all auction values are coming in at $1. I’m guessing this might be due to #1, but wanted to see if this is from anything else?

    Thanks so much!

AAV look low. Is this because of a setting that needs to be changed? Checking ESPN, looks like D. Johnson is getting closer to $64, not $40

    Few questions/issues:
    1) Would it be possible to save settings to your account so that I don’t have to reenter everything every time?
    2) I can’t save my league settings. It won’t even let me click the save button. Also the kicker slot for ‘starters by position’ is wonky and wont let me set a number. my settings: weighted avg using yahoo adp, imputing, no IDP, 12 teams, yahoo scoring, etc on chrome browser.
    3) when i adjust the scoring settings the VOR values dont change at all. maybe because it’s not saving properly but im not sure.

It would be great if you could add in the Download CSV a separate column for “MFL position” that you just scrape from MFL, since I know a lot of us use that platform. In particular, this would help for sorting out DT’s from DE’s (which you just list together as DL).

This would also help in a big way for separating S from CB (which you list together as DB). Is this doable? It seems like it would also help with the app itself, making smaller position groups if desired.

Using custom rankings, vorHigh and vorLow seem off; vorLow is often above vorHigh, and sometimes actual vor is outside of the range between low/high

Hi Darren. The vorLow and vorHigh numbers are value over replacement based on the players projected floor and ceiling. There is not necessarily a requirement that vorLow should be less than vorHigh. It is just an indication that there is fewer points between the replacement and the player when using the ceiling than using the floor.

Will projections downloaded today still be reliable for a draft between preseason game 4 and week 1?

Put another way, are the underlying sources of data typically subject to continuous updates throughout the summer, and if so, do such updates tend to be significant enough to materially alter today’s consensus projections?

Love the projections/VOR’s/ everything! It’s been instrumental in my back-to-back runner-up finishes (not winning at the draft, but at least I’m far from losing).

Quick observation, but the DST rankings appear (at least when I looked) to be jumbled due to the “projected points” and “ceiling” columns having the values flip-flopped for a majority of them. I’m s devout streamer when it comes to DST, but still thought it would be important to point out.

AAV appears broken when I change to .5 PPT scoring; the max value becomes 4.7. ADP is also showing up blank. Are these issues due to a lack of data this early in the season?

I also have this problem. There is a model bust when you change value for receptions. For instance, David Johnson’s value goes from $68 to $2. Hopefully they can fix that!

It appears that changing the points per reception setting affects AAV and ADP. AAV drops significantly with any change. I’ve played around with other scoring settings and only receptions seems to have this affect.

I noticed you if the ability to limit yourself to different columns in the projection tool, I think that is great. My question is about the day of draft and if you had to limit yourself to only 3-5 columns based upon what the most important ones were, what would they be? Also, when picking your starting lineup, do you ever set a Max Risk tolerance? If so, what is it?

Hi guys, loved this app when I discovered it last year. Must say it seems a little slower this year but still appreciate this resource nonetheless! In the Lineup Optimizer, is there something wrong with the calculation of player Costs? The high and low rank cost multipliers don’t seem to be working correctly, at least for me, as even the highest ranked players have a Cost that is lower than their AAV.

Help Isaac! I would love your advice! I am concerned about the start up dynasty auction I’ve got coming up. I’m confident few if any of the other 11 owners use FFAnalytics for projections and AAV. The scoring is custom (QBs: 6pts/TD | WR/RBs are .5 PPR while TEs are 1 PPR) The roster size is 26 and the 9 starting positions are as follows : QB:1, RB: 2, WR: 3, TE: 1, FLX (RB,WR,TE): 2, NO Kickers or Def/ST). The problem I think I will face is that everyone will be using an AAV that puts, say, David Johnson at ~$75. When I punch in the custom scoring into FFA, his AAV is at $34. Thats QUITE a big difference! What would you advise here?

Those low AAVs are likely coming from MyFantasyLeague:
      http://www03.myfantasyleague.com/2017/aav?COUNT=32&POS=*&CUTOFF=5&IS_PPR=1&IS_KEEPER=0&TIME=

We’re working on allowing custom costs. In the meantime, I’d suggesting finding other sources of AAV that more closely reflect the player’s cost (and changing the AAV source in the app to reflect those sources).

I attempted to do what you suggested by moving the AAV score from AVG to either ESPN or Yahoo. This did not work. No matter how many times I selected ESPN, then saved, when I went back to the “Auction Settings” window again, the AAV was still set to AVG.

On the lineup optimizer, changing the scoring settings to add 1 pt for receptions reduces all the auction values too far. The recommended lineup I get is Aaron Rodgers, David Johnson, LeVeon Bell, Antonio Brown, Julio Jones, Odell Beckham, Rob Gronkowski, Justin Tucker, and the Cardinals, with $66 left over for starters.

There is no option to move them into the “Other Players Drafted” section. Obviously this would limit ability to use the tool during a live draft (which I am very keen to do!).

Hi all. In looking through the 2017 NFL AAVs, I noticed NFL.com also has a different set of values, “Bid Amount,” listed in the NFL draft rooms that does not vary by scoring format, total teams, auction pool, or any other league variables. These values seem heavily inflated in several cases when compared to the NFL AAVs populated in the FFA projections and found elsewhere on NFL.com.

Does anyone have any insight into what these “Bid Amount” values are and why they are listed? Because these values are displayed in the draft rooms, and not the NFL AAVs, the concern is that these inflated numbers will skew bidding behavior. Which numbers should be used when considering player cost/optimization, the AAVs or the “Bid Amounts”?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts from the development team or any other users who have noticed these.

Having lots of issues with the interface on the new projections app. (The issues show up for me w/ Safari and Chrome on OSX, and Chrome on iOS.)

For one thing, the Create/Save Custom Settings options are always greyed out and non-functional; sometimes, the Delete Custom Settings option is enabled (even though the other two are still disbaled, but whether it is or it isn’t, my settings are never actually saved.

Also, the Select Columns settings don’t persist if I do *anything* in the app. e.g. if I add the Bye Week and Tier columns, so that I can keep those in mind as I’m going through a snake draft, and remove the AAV column because I’m doing a snake draft where it is irrelevant, and then I select any players to exclude because they’ve been drafted, the column settings immediately revert back to the defaults.

The third issue is more easily worked around: if there are multiple positions listed in the Positions filter, and you delete two of them at once (or in rapid succession, before the app has a chance to finish updating to reflect the first deletion) then the app deletes the first one, but then gets stuck in a loop where it keeps deleting an restoring the second one, and there is no way to break out of that loop short of just closing the window w/ the app in it.

Here is a quick screencast showing all three issues. https://screencast.com/t/y6OcGWwNuwO

    VOR and QB’s too early.
I am worried a bit on how the app is showing me to take Aaron Rodgers in the first round. I will have the 3rd pick in Keeper League. I have the overall 5th pick, but two teams in front of me are keeping a player as their 1st pick. I am keeping David Johnson, Brandin Cooks and Terrelle Pryor. I entered in my league settings and scoring and at my pick its telling me to go with Mr. Rodgers… it seems early. I do however think he won’t be there 7 picks later when I have my second pick. I lean more towards a guy like Evans @ WR or a staring RB then going back to the QB late for a Mariota or Cousins…. thoughts

Hey Chad, along with VOR there are some other factors to consider when drafting such as far the predictability of point variation by position. You can read more about that here: https://fantasyfootballanalytics.net/2013/07/expected-points-by-position-rank-in-fantasy-football.html

Here is the specific advice on drafting QBs early:

      1. Spend your first picks on RBs, WRs, and TEs (their variations in fantasy points are fairly predictable, and their values decrease exponentially after the best ones are off the board).
      2. After drafting RBs, WRs, and TEs, draft a QB. QBs’ variations in fantasy points are fairly predictable, and their values don’t decrease as fast as RBs, WRs, and TEs, so you can still get a fairly solid QB after the top QBs are off the board.

Just discovered this site, and it’s kind of over my head, but I am intrigued with it. I am not looking to delve deeply into every statistical category, but I do like the fact that you combine a ton of uncommon factors, that according to your listing, tends to be very accurate in fantasy. My questions (listed below)
    1. Do you offer PPR projections yet? I could not see any way to find them.
    2. Do you give advice on trades and such? Seems a little beneath this site (not in a negative way, just this site looks really really serious, which is both intimidating and cool).
    3. I was just looking for a rankings(err, projections based on what I saw about opinion on rankings) for PPR, 12 team, overall, position, etc. Also a cheat sheet to use during my draft that I could draft from and destroy my fantasy mates using the common sites like ESPN, FantasyPros, Yahoo, etc. I really liked how you explained that your site uses a lot of sources, which tends to lead to better accuracy and predictive outputs.
    4. Lastly, the site seems really challenging to navigate, is that just me?

      3. You can just the custom rankings from the projections app (http://apps.fantasyfootballanalytics.net/) for you draft

Main issues I have run into initially were trying to find content from 2017 (working now that page is loading completely), site home page loading, but not being able to scroll down for some reason (working now), Post Comment button disappeared when comment box has a lot of content. After changing settings to PPR, somehow Jordan Howard leaped over Melvin Gordon somehow, even though most consensus has them the other way, which is probably due to one of the mechanisms used on the site. Was a little worried after seeing comments to similar situations, but I assume it’s just something I have not taken the time to understand, so that’s fine. Other than that, looks good so far.

    1. Have you guys found a way to scrape ESPN for their IDP projections yet? They’re still some of the best but you don’t include them in your projections.
    2. Can you code in an option to sort by MFL position? This is especially helpful on defense, for DT/DE and CB/S designations that might be different by site.

Any chance you introduce a proprietary “FFA Composite” weighted projection source that is a composite of subscription sources you guys have access to? It seems like including that in the projections tool could add a ton of stability and accuracy (especially in IDP where you had only 2 functional sources this year w/ the loss of PFF via Yahoo and the ESPN scrape not up and functioning yet), without violating any code of ethics for providing subscription stats for free.

Can you please explain why you’re still including both Fantasy Data and FantasyfootballNerd as projections sources when they are the same source? That makes for double counting, yes? Fantasy Data is just the more complete database.

Anytime I try to download Raw projections I get an error – dlRawProj – Failed – Server problem. I’m currently using Chrome. Any help or guidance would be appreciated.

I’ve been having trouble with including replacement level values for missed games. That check box often disappears from the settings option. And when I do see it and check it, the downloaded data looks the exact same as the data when I don’t check it. Could you guys look into that? And keep up the great work!!

I am having a problem with grid filters – positions. If I click on RB, for example, the RB turns blue, and nothing happens. In the past, all other positions would disappear from the list, and would show only RB. Is this a bug on your end, or am I doing something wrong?

Appears to be working for me. Did you change any other settings to get this result? Please provide the additional detail requested here: https://fantasyfootballanalytics.net/about-the-site/faq#errors

Also, in league settings, it always resets to 10 teams, no matter what I enter. I change it to 12 teams, and after about ten seconds, the list reorders. I click “save custom settings,” Then if I check league settings, it again shows 10 teams.

The download button is not working (even after resetting password / signing in). Any thoughts?

Are you looking at weekly settings? Is this a paid or free account?

I had a draft yesterday, and the app worked very well for the most part.
However, the position filters do not work. Clicking on them only changes the color, and the list doesn’t re-sort to show only the one position that is clicked on.
This made it somewhat difficult to use, but I was very pleased with how things ultimately went.

The projections page begins to load as updated on 9/4/17 but then opens up on 8/31/17 update. I have a free account. Is this why?

Is there a way to select which set of projections you download or view? It looks like the week 1 projections are displayed and when I hit download, it downloads only the raw projections.

When I remove a player from the shiny app, the VOR of the other players doesn’t seem to change. So if David Johnson and LeVeon Bell are ranked 1 and 2 by VOR, if I remove LeVeon, the VOR should probably increase for David Johnson, right? Or am I not thinking about it correctly
