Update to Fantasy Football Draft Optimizer OpenCPU app
23By popular demand, I updated the Fantasy Football Draft Optimizer OpenCPU app with two changes:
- The app now takes into account how many teams are in your league when estimating players’ projected costs.
- I uploaded the new projections from FantasyPros. The projections are now up to date for those about to have their league drafts.
You can find the Fantasy Football Draft Optimizer OpenCPU app here:
The post describing how to use the draft optimizer app is located here:

Great work again! I think I was the first one to comment back in July but my draft is now September 1st so if you could update once more in a week or so that would be great. If not, these should work! Thanks so much for taking the time to do this. Great blog!
Really awesome, job. Am I missing something, or does this assume no bench players? My optimal starting line-up adds up to the total auction budget.
Got it. This then becomes less useful for figuring out the intrinsic value of my starters in a league in which closer to ~20% of my budget goes toward bench players. Consequently, to get a gauge on where pricing will fall in practice, maybe I should adjust the input budget to 80% of the actual budget (i.e. $160 in a $200 league) to account for that.
Sure thing, I’ll plan on updating early next week. Good luck in your draft!
The optimizer only optimizes the sum of the starting lineup’s fantasy points. It assumes that each bench player is $1, and counts the bench players towards your total budget. Does that make sense?
I think there might be something wrong with the Projected Costs for a 12 team $200 cap league. There is only $2,400 available, yet the projected costs column sums to $3,573
Yes, if you want to reserve more money for bench players, you could make your input budget smaller. See this Harvard analysis for why you should spend most, if not all, of your budget on your starting lineup:

Hi Matt. The variable “projectedCost” reflects a 10% premium for the top players and a 10% discount for the lower-tiered players, as suggested by the Harvard analysis on how much to bid for players (http://harvardsportsanalysis.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/fantasyfootballdraftanalysis1.pdf). These values are also scaled to your league cap. Does that make sense? For more details, see here:

This is amazing. Would it be terribly out-of-line for me to request a slight tweak (or two) that would improve usability? I know this is a free tool made out of love for the game (and the analytics) but I feel like these would make it much more practical of a tool:
1) Could you at least make the combo boxes larger? Considering I have to hold the shift button down to click into a combo box, it’s really tough to rely on the scroll bar to find players to select.
1a) Alternatively, what about using a two-combo box system (i.e. send values from an “All Players” to a “Drafted By Me” box using a >> button) to accomplish this? I don’t think it’s a particularly difficult tweak, but it’s been a while since I’ve actually done it myself.
Thanks very, very much.
Awesome, thank you.
Isaac this is awesome, much thanks.
Quick question – sometimes the projected points and projected costs do not seem to align? For example, I have a 16 team league, and CJ Spiller and Marshawn Lynch are projected to have ~232 points each. But the projected cost for Spiller is only $80 while for Lynch it is $103. Why the discrepancy?
Thanks again–that made a huge difference for me. (same Anonymous as above)
@Tony: The projected points are calculated for your custom league based on your scoring settings. The projected costs are based on average auction values from FantasyPros (modified based on your league size). Spiller has a higher average auction value than Lynch.
@Anonymous: I made the combo boxes larger. Hope that helps!
Hey Issac,
First of all great work! I’m really looking forward to use this…
Secondly, could you please update it again – my draft is on Monday 🙂
P.S.: I will donate if I win my league
Just added a donation box on the lower right sidebar.
Thanks!

Just updated the projections. Good luck with your draft!
Thanks Isaac! Is there a way to NULLify the cap setting for leagues with no CAP?
I’m not sure I follow. The tool is for auction drafts. I’m not familiar with any auction drafts without a cap. If there’s no cap (i.e., players don’t have a cost), the tool would just give you the players with the highest projected points at each position (within your risk tolerance). Is this what you’re looking for, or did you have something else in mind? It would help to know what you’re trying to do.
I guess that’s what I’m thinking. Yahoo league, no auction no cap. just a round robin pick your guy
Okay, it’s for a snake draft. I’m planning to make a similar draft optimizer tool for snake drafts. In the meantime, you might check out my post on how to win your snake draft:

For those looking for an optimizer tool for snake drafts, I just finished creating one.

This is great. I need help interpreting my excel file output. I hid the data columns to see the following columns- unnamed (number), name, position, team, overall rank, position rank, projected cost.
Should the projected cost figure be my target value in the auction (< that number is even better?)? And how is overall rank different than the left most column (unlabeled)?
Hey David,
The blank column is the row numbers. I deleted the column to simplify the data file. Projected cost represents the cost you can expect and should be willing to pay for a player if he is selected by the optimizer. It is discussed in more detail here:

Hope that helps!
