Running Back and Wide Receiver Gold Mining – Week 1
16The graphs below summarize the projections from a variety of sources. This week’s summary includes projections from: CBS: CBS Average, Yahoo Sports, NFL, NumberFire, FantasySharks and FantasyFootballNerd. For more details on WR gold mining and how to interpret the graphs above, see Chad’s post explaining gold mining.
Running Backs Standard Scoring
From the graph below notice that:
- Eddie Lacy, Matt Forte, Alfred Morris, Rashad Jennings and Darren Sproles are the five players with the largest upside (as measured from their (pseudo)medians). For these players, some projections are placing much higher valuations than others. If you are projected to lose this week by quite a few points and are looking for a risky play that may tip the balance in your favor, these are players to consider.
- Marshawn Lynch, Ameer Abdullah, Charles Sims, Bishop Sankey and Ronnie Hillman are the players with the smallest downside, which suggests that while their median projection might not be great, there is less uncertainty concerning how poorly they may perform. So, if you are likely to win by a lot and want to reduce your downside risk, these players may deserve extra attention.
- On the other hand, LeSean McCoy, Carlos Hyde, Alfred Blue, Tevin Coleman and David Johnson are the five players with the largest downside this week. If you are planning on starting them, it may be prudent to investigate why some projections have such low expectations for these players.
Running Backs Point-per-Reception
From the graph below notice that:
- Eddie Lacy, Matt Forte, Andre Ellington, Alfred Morris and Darren Sproles are the five players with the largest upside (as measured from their (pseudo)medians). For these players, some projections are placing much higher valuations than others. If you are projected to lose this week by quite a few points and are looking for a risky play that may tip the balance in your favor, these are players to consider.
- Ameer Abdullah, Chris Ivory, Isaiah Crowell, Doug Martin and Ronnie Hillman are the players with the smallest downside, which suggests that while their median projection might not be great, there is less uncertainty concerning how poorly they may perform. So, if you are likely to win by a lot and want to reduce your downside risk, these players may deserve extra attention.
- On the other hand, LeSean McCoy, C.J. Spiller, Tevin Coleman, Roy Helu and David Johnson are the five players with the largest downside this week. If you are planning on starting them, it may be prudent to investigate why some projections have such low expectations for these players.
Wide Receivers Standard Scoring

- Odell Beckham, A.J. Green, Mike Evans, Alshon Jeffery and Jordan Matthews are the five players with the largest upside (as measured from their (pseudo)medians). For these players, some projections are placing much higher valuations than others. If you are projected to lose this week by quite a few points and are looking for a risky play that may tip the balance in your favor, these are players to consider.
- Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Floyd, Mike Wallace, Brandon LaFell and Marques Colston are the players with the smallest downside, which suggests that while their median projection might not be great, there is less uncertainty concerning how poorly they may perform. So, if you are likely to win by a lot and want to reduce your downside risk, these players may deserve extra attention.
- On the other hand, Julio Jones, John Brown, Eddie Royal, Rueben Randle and Brandon Coleman are the five players with the largest downside this week. If you are planning on starting them, it may be prudent to investigate why some projections have such low expectations for these players.

Jordy Nelson’s on IR…shouldn’t he be excluded?
i believe that’s why his value floor is 0.
I assume this post must be generated by script and that it must be pulling in old data.
You say “Jordy Nelson and Kelvin Benjamin are [among] the five players with the largest upside…” but the reason for their spread is that both are out with season ending injuries. Benjamin’s injury was almost a full month ago.
It is also very flawed to say ” Trent Richardson is [among] the five players with the largest upside..” when he has been cut and doesn’t have an NFL team.
This is potentially a really cool resource, but there are definitely glitches to address. Best of luck crafting this into a very useful tool.
Gentlemen,
I am finding that the lineup optimizer is not working. Here is the error message when I go to the page:
An error has occurred:
“ailed: process died”, Production server: True
Also, I am curious why Jordy Nelson and Kelvin Benjamin are in consideration with these graphs since both players are out with season ending injuries?
I’m assuming because a few of the ranking haven’t updated their projections after the injury’s. Notice it’s also the two players with the biggest range
To everyone above, yes, we are going to manually exclude the injuries/cut players (Nelson, Benjamin, etc.) because some sources have not updated their projections.
Thanks,
Isaac
Great Charts! Is it possible to see the code behind them?
Hi Brian,
Yes, see more info (including scripts) here:

Such good stuff! I’m dangling these posts in front of my non-data-junkie FF friends (well, the ones who aren’t in my league this year) as an R gateway drug with remarkable success!
Missing data? You have James White but none of the other Patriots RBs that all play before him. Blount, Lewis, and Bolden.
I see them in our Week 2 data.
Great work on this. I love your draft opencpu app and the gold mining. Wish week 2 was about before waivers cleared tomorrow (thurs) morning. I was thinking of trying to tinker with the code from the github project to get some results for other positions as well. Unfortunately my R skills need some improvement so it might take some time.
How much of your rankings depend on paid subscriptions / logins? Are you able to add or remove different ranking sources pretty easily?
We use publicly available sources.
This is fantastic. Is there any way you guys could post the results file so I can incorporate into my model? I understand that I should be able to run the scripts, but I would like to incorporate this info into my model before tonight’s game.
Thanks!
What results file? You can download the data yourself using our Projections tool:
